some notes from the chris kraus film screening tonight
we watched terrorists in love and the golden bowl or repression and gravity & grace
my favourite lines from gravity & grace were “feelings are shit” and “the teachings of Mrs Evans” and “sometimes I feel like a repository for hopeless bullshit” and all the songs the NZ alien flood cult sang together and the melon and just the whole film really
after the screening she answered questions and in part of the discussion she gave a rave review for emilygould’s book Friendship. she loves your book emily! and she talked about emily and ruth and emily books
she said something like “apparently emily books has a good following in australia like they describe their ideal reader as an australian medical receptionist”
………annnnnnnnddd I grabbed my face in shock and started sweating?? and my friend was like lol elanor you’re a medical receptionist you really are a type! and i was like haha and burning with thrills like oh my god is chris kraus talking about me??? but see, what she had actually said was “a medical receptionist from western australia” so I was like maybe it’s not me maybe there is another? but then chris kraus said something else that made me think uh, god i think it’s me?
afterwards she was talking to my brother’s girlfriend who is a writer and playwright from new zealand and then I went over and asked chris kraus if she would sign my copy of aliens & anorexia and she said yes and she asked who she should make it out to and I said my name a few times and then she asked me to write my name on her hand…. SO I DID. and then she couldn’t make out my writing on her skin so we went to find a piece of paper and I wrote my name and she inscribed my book and I said “uuuuh, you know how you mentioned a medical receptionist? it might not be me, i’m not from western australia, but I um, that thing you mentioned, i think it’s me” and she was like “oh my god it’s you! so you’re not from western australia. they’ll be thrilled we met. i mentioned you in a talk i gave earlier this week” and I said well i love your work and thank you for signing my book
it was a great evening and i was very happy and red
